Now in our 21st National Hockey League season, the New Jersey Devils continue
to reach out to the community.
This commitment starts with the team’s owners—and
continues with its management, players, and former players.
While our goals on the ice may be obvious—winning hockey
games and bringing the Stanley Cup back to the state of New Jersey;
our goals off the ice may not
be so clear.
Our unique association with the National Basketball Association’s New Jersey
Nets has created the New Jersey Nets and Devils Foundation—the not-for-profit,
philanthropic arm of both teams. During the past season alone, the Devils have
helped tens of thousands of people through countless numbers of civic and charitable
organizations. Each of these organizations benefitted in a different way. Some
were the result of the tragic events that affected our nation on September
11, 2001. Many received autographed memorabilia for their auctions, tricky
trays,
and raffles. Others received promotional items for their civic events. Several
hard-working groups have made thousands of dollars for their charities through
fund-raising programs and holiday parties
Devils’ players have visited children’s wards at area hospitals during
the holiday season, while some players have attended charitable functions or
participated in public service announcements to fight for a group’s cause.
The Devils have honored those who have served New Jersey hockey
since 1983, by recognizing the top high school student/athletes
since 1993, and have hosted
the state’s high school ice hockey championship since 1998.
The recently-formed alumni association holds a charity golf classic
every summer. Among the beneficiaries are local charities and
a scholarship fund—now
in its fourth season. The association also conducts a series of clinics for
youth hockey groups throughout the state, while challenging area
hockey teams to charity
games.
Some of our less-fortunate neighbors have benefitted from our
game night drives—the
food drive, Toys for Tots, and the coat drive. Many of our corporate partners
feel the same way we do about the community—FOX Sports Net, Modell’s,
JVC, Mountain Dew, and Drake’s have joined us in various community relations
efforts.
