Hospital Visits
Devils’ players visit pediatric wards at local hospitals
each year. Hospitals visited recently include: Hackensack University
Medical Center (Hackensack, NJ), Saint Barnabas Medical Center
(Livingston, NJ), University Hospital (Newark, NJ), Children’s
Specialized Hospital (Mountainside, NJ), Overlook Hospital and
Valerie Center (Summit, NJ), and St. Joseph’s Hospital
(Paterson, NJ). Players sign autographs, take pictures, visit
with youngsters
and distribute gifts during their visits.
Charities
Defenseman Scott Niedermayer was named to the Muscular Dystrophy
Association’s 2002 Muscle Team. At MDA’s press conference/kickoff
party, he was introduced to his 2002 MDA buddy—a local child
affected by neuromuscular disease. Scott has been a member of
the Muscle Team since 1998. Left wing Jim McKenzie is a member
of the advisory panel of Shoot for a Cure, a campaign to raise
funds for spinal cord research. Defenseman Scott Niedermayer and
forward Patrik Elias participated in a charitable autograph session
to raise funds for Transplant Speakers International, an organization
that raises funds and awareness for organ transplants. McKenzie
and defenseman Ken Daneyko represented the New Jersey Devils at
the taping of the 2002 New Jersey/New York Metro Children’s
Miracle Network Telethon. McKenzie also represented the Devils
at the West Milford Bears Hockey Team’s fundraising and
awards dinner. Right wing Brian Gionta participated in a charitable
autograph signing to benefit the St. Charles Borromeo Church and
Catholic School in Rochester, NY. Devils’ Captain Scott
Stevens donated 500 tickets to each 2002 playoff game as part
of his Scott’s Kids program. The recipients were children
of the victims of September 11, as well as other local charitable
organizations. Defenseman Ken Daneyko participated in a number
of charitable golf outings this past summer. Among them were tournaments
benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newark LifeCamp, Inc.
and the Yogi Berra Golf Classic for Special Needs Scouting. Left
wing Jay Pandolfo, was one of several local athletes honored at
the YMCA’s Sports Triangle Awards Dinner this past summer,
which not only recognized the charitable efforts of these athletes,
but also the achievements of area youth. Goaltender Martin Brodeur,
defenseman Ken Daneyko and forwards Sergei Brylin and Jim McKenzie
attended the Canadian Society of New York Foundation’s annual
fundraiser and awards dinner, which benefited Ice Hockey In Harlem
and the Camp Scholarship Fund. Devils’ players participated
in a number of photo shoots to help promote various causes including:

Hockey Fights Cancer
The National Hockey League, its players’ association, officials’
association, member clubs, and others have committed to raising
money and awareness for local cancer efforts, and to support the
American Cancer Society and Canadian Cancer Society.The Devils
participate in the NHL’s online charity auction, while Captain
Scott Stevens wears a special Hockey Fights Cancer patch during
a selected game.
Read Across America
The Devils joined schools across the United States in celebrating
Read Across America. Players visited local schools in an effort
to promote literacy and education by reading to elementary school
children.
Fan Club Dinner
The Devils Fan Club Dinner is held annually. More than $10,000
was raised for charity during the sports memorabilia auction at
last year’s event. More than 500 people attend each year,
including Devils’ players and staff.
Practice Sessions
For the 17th consecutive season, South Mountain Arena is
serving as the Devils’ practice facility and, once again, all of
the club’s practice sessions at South Mountain during
training camp and the regular-season will be open to the public
free-of-charge. Please note that practice times are subject to change
without notice.
